17-Year Magicicada

The 17-year cicadas are now emerging from their slumber on the East Coast of the US. These insects of the genus Magicicada have a mysterious life cycle in which they remain underground as nymphs for the majority of their lives, only to reappear and take to the skies every 17 years. The last appearance of this long-lived variety appeared in 1996.

To some cultures, the cicada is the symbol of resurrection. In Japan they are known as semi (セミ) and are associated with Summer.

It is now 2013 and a stirring has been heard in the depths of the Vault. Could the Magicicada be the harbinger of yet another ancient symbol in a form that has not appeared since '96?
